The Movie Trailer

This one is for the ladies.

No respect to the great movie trailer voices. But why must men narrate every trailer regardless of the audience? The first time I remember this sounding weird was the Waiting to Exhale trailer. Here’s a movie about women (although directed by a man) dealing with women’s issues and the movie trailer guy is a deep male. It doesn’t fail, but talk about a trailer that would benefit from a female!

The reason for this seems to be that the typical movie trailer voices are a sure thing. No one wants to take a risk and use a woman. With so much riding on opening weekend, the trailer needs to absolutely nail it the first time. There is no fixing it if the opening weekend box office numbers don’t live up to expectations. In short, the male VO guys are a safe choice.

And that’s really a shame, because there are so many interesting, dynamic female voices out there that could sell a movie as well as any man. Don’t believe me? Then listen to Linda Hunt in the God of War 2 trailer. She’s only in it for a few seconds, but she is awesome.
